Epoxy resin: the versatile companion

Epoxy resin is not just a sophisticated word for medium plastic. It is a composite blend, which is rotated into solid and flexible products that can mimic the appearance of stone and metal materials at a more affordable cost and at a fraction of the weight.

Plastic can be transformed into millions of things, so to distinguish our resin from other plastics or other types of resins, we need to understand the similarities and differences. Grocery bags are plastic, but they are thin and fragile.

The resin has many properties including: viscosity (fluidity), maximum thickness of the layer that can be applied by casting process, Duration of the hardening process, Adhesion properties on surfaces of different materials, Degree of hardness after complete completion of the transformation

How is epoxy resin used?

Essentially, epoxy resin is very versatile and can be used for different types of artistic and artisanal projects such as:

  • Waterproofing of soils in living spaces
  • Holding stone carpets inside and out
  • Seal resistant to worktop cuts in the kitchen
  • Pieces of epoxy resin and wood such as cutting boards
  • Modern renovation ideas for older buildings
  • Jewelry in epoxy resin
  • Quick repairs with a special UV resin
  • Epoxy resin art objects such as resin art images
  • Moulding of mussels and figurines of all kinds
  • Decorative objects such as resin geodes and resin petri dishes
  • Timeless resin furniture such as epoxy resin tables
  • Resin floors for shower recipients
  • Waterproof sealer for garage floors
  • Moulding of resin artifacts and materials
  • Self-construction of aquariums and terrariums
  • Repairing and pasting small pieces together
  • Resin as a finishing layer for the construction of boats
  • Kitesurfing boards
  • Model building projects

What should I consider when buying resin?

Epoxy resins are now available at many specialty retailers and most DIY stores. The choice is usually even greater when you order via the Internet, where you can often get these materials at the best price. Online, you’ll probably find by far the widest selection of high-quality product variants for all possible application areas at many retailers.

If you’re just starting to work with epoxy resins, you may be discouraged by the fact that many epoxy components aren’t really cheap. But this shouldn’t be a reason for you to always look for the cheapest deals. After all, product variants offered at particularly low prices can sometimes be of such a lower quality that they cost points of satisfaction and demotivate you, not to mention that it could completely ruin your work.

Some products may also contain health-safe solvents that evaporate during the drying process. Your material may not harden completely or is difficult to mix before the drying process. Some cheap resins do not impress with their crystalline transparency, but appear slightly yellowish during treatment. This unpleasant yellowish hue can be intensified later with a little sun.

Jewelry tending to resin? Do you like it??

The list of materials that can be used to create beautiful jewelry or dreamlike accessories is almost endless. But practically no other material is as versatile and can be treated as individually as epoxy resin. If the crystalline surface is in itself an absolute eye-catcher, you can conjure up unusual unique pieces with small incorporated details such as beads, stones or flowers. In the resin, these elements put beautiful accents and remain forever.

In the following article, we’ll show you with many tips and tricks how you can easily create your own precious epoxy resin jewelry.

What can we use as a resin for jewelry?

For the manufacture of your individual pieces of epoxy jewelry, you have the choice between different resins: epoxy resin, UV resin or polyester resin. All variants are available in a hardware store, a craft shop or in all cases online. With epoxy resin and polyester resin, the right blending ratio is extremely important for an ideal result.

You should follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the packaging very carefully when mixing resin and hardener. The resin is often available in relatively large containers. The hardener, however, is often available in smaller bottles. The reason is that the epoxy resin for moulding must be mixed in uneven proportions.

Differences between resins

The biggest difference between epoxy resin and polyester resin is the hardening time and appearance. Because polyester resin is very robust and dries quickly, it is often used for mould parts such as contoured plates, mould construction or in boat construction. It is usually slightly cloudy when hardened. Epoxy resin, on the other hand, with its crystalline appearance, is much better suited for the transformation into jewelry and accessories.

A very good alternative is UV resin. This hardens in a few minutes with a UV lamp and there is no need to mix two components. One drawback is that the layers can only be cast very finely. This is not that important when making jewelry, as they are usually small pieces.

What objects can be cast in resin?

There are no limits to creativity when selecting the elements to flow into the resin. Flowers, stickers, beads, stones, glitter, food or even real insects prepared – anything is possible. Sometimes it is advisable to test the effect of such an element in the resin before sinking the actual object.

It is much easier to work with solid, compact but not too heavy elements, as they do not lose their shape in epoxy resin like small beads, sequins or mica flakes. These can also be mixed with resin without any problems. Heavy objects such as crystals and small stones must be poured between the different layers of resin, otherwise they would sink. The casting resin is of low viscosity, i.e. very thin consistency.

Filigree objects such as natural materials or dried flowers should be placed in the still liquid resin with great dexterity, otherwise they could appear as unsightly lumps in the resin. In this case, it may be useful to seal the items with towel glue beforehand.
